The Urban League of Kansas, located in Wichita, was founded in 1954. The Urban League of Kansas manages a Family Resource Center which supports and strengthens families in the areas of housing education and fair housing counseling, financial literacy, health equity, education, career and workforce development, leadership and civic engagement.
Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is in the south-central region of the state, and is three hours driving time southwest of Kansas City, five hours north of Dallas, eight hours southeast of Denver and two and one-half hours north of Oklahoma City. There are more than 10 four-year degree-granting universities and colleges, one medical school, one law school and three community colleges in the MSA, including Wichita State University, Friends University, Newman University, Baker University, Southwestern College, Tabor College, Presidents College, Bethel College, Webster University, University School of Medicine – Wichita, Butler County Community College, Cowley County Community College and Hesston College. Wichita offers a wide selection of arts, sports, recreation and entertainment events and activities – Century II Civic Center, Indian Center Museum, Exploration Place, Old Cowtown, Botanica Gardens, Wichita Art Museum, Wichita Center for the Arts, Wichita River Festival, Music Theater, Sedgwick County Historical Museum, Wichita Symphony, Kansas African American Museum and high school, college and professional sports.
The CEO should be prepared to enhance and expand mission-related services; attract, develop, and engage staff, board members, and supporters; and expand social entrepreneurship ventures. This will require the President to continue to strengthen the balance sheet and increase operational profits; sustain the organization's recent momentum; and lead it in new directions. A parallel priority will be to enhance community awareness of Urban League’s mission and maintain its reputation. The new leader should both support and exemplify the organization's values and culture. Accordingly, in addition to the characteristics indicated above, the successful candidate must have a proven background of organizational leadership and administration; building community, government, and organization relationships; champion diversity and inclusion; customer-orientation, successful marketing and fund raising; board and staff collaboration and teamwork; possess superior communication skills; and leading creative and innovative programs and services.

Successful candidates must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in business administration, social work, public administration, or an appropriate discipline from an accredited university, at least five years of senior level experience in business management, strategic planning, fiscal management, program development and administration, or a combination of the above. Three years of experience with a volunteer board or other demonstrated community leadership experience. Proven record of leadership and management of a community-based organization with at least five years of senior non-profit or for-profit management experience. Proven record of fund raising; proposal writing, organizational skills; written and oral communication skills; planning and evaluation skills; and general management skills. Prior experience within the Urban League Movement is desirable but not required.
