Senior Employee Benefits Account Manager

About the Role

Blackbird Benefits Collective is looking for an experienced and passionate Senior Account Manager who leads with both expertise and heart. In this role you will own meaningful client relationships from onboarding through renewal, manage the full scope of their employee benefits programs, and serve as a trusted resource for the employees those programs are designed to support. This is a role for someone who can run independently, communicate proactively, and bring genuine care to every interaction. If you’re someone who cares about long term growth, there’s a path for you here with increased consulting authority over time, deepening systems expertise, and building and managing a defined portfolio of clients.

We work with nonprofits, B Corps, and mission-driven organizations of all sizes. The common thread is that they are all trying to do right by their people, and so are we. Your work will have a direct impact on the humans we serve and will help drive Blackbird's mission to break the mold of cookie-cutter service so rampant in our industry.

About Blackbird Benefits Collective

Blackbird Benefits Collective is a woman-led, Certified B Corp employee benefits agency, and currently the only one of its kind in the country. Our mission is to help clients bring a greater sense of humanity to their healthcare programs. We recognize the cultural and socioeconomic factors that create barriers to health and well-being, and we provide kind-hearted, trauma-informed support for employees as they navigate our confounding healthcare systems. The scope of our work is technical. The way we do it is heart-centric.

We are committed to building a workplace where every person feels seen, heard, and valued. We stand against anti-Black racism and all forms of oppression, and we commit sustained action to dismantle racist systems and practices within ourselves and our networks. We strongly encourage people of color, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and non-binary people, parents, and individuals with disabilities to apply. If you need a reasonable accommodation at any point in the application or interview process, please let us know.

Job Responsibilities

This is a remote role for candidates located in the greater Portland, Oregon metro area. We hold occasional in-person meetings and community events in Portland. You must have a dedicated, private workspace with room for a double monitor and full keyboard setup. The nature of this work requires focus, careful data review, and the ability to take sensitive client calls without interruption.

The Senior Account Manager will:

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, serving as the primary point of contact for inquiries, escalations, and issue resolution
  • Own the full client service lifecycle, including onboarding, ongoing administration, renewal analysis, and plan design support, with minimal day-to-day oversight
  • Translate complex insurance concepts into clear, plain language for clients and their employees
  • Develop deep proficiency in our core platforms, including AgencyBloc, Employee Navigator, and Zywave, and take on increasing responsibility for system builds and administration over time
  • Collaborate with the internal team to ensure seamless and efficient service delivery
  • Stay current on industry trends, regulations, and best practices, and proactively share relevant updates with clients
  • Advocate for healthcare rights on behalf of marginalized communities

Required Skills

You will be successful in this role if you bring the following:

  • Warmth, professionalism, and unending patience in every interaction, with clients, co-workers, vendors, and the employees you serve. Our clients come to us during some of the most confusing and frustrating moments of their relationship with the healthcare system. How we show up in those moments is what sets Blackbird apart.
  • Clear, kind, and adaptable written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write for different voices and audiences
  • The ability to work independently while proactively keeping your team informed on project and task ownership
  • Careful, detail-oriented work habits, with a track record of following established processes accurately and consistently. In benefits administration, the details matter, and the people depending on us can't afford mistakes.
  • Knowledge of and genuine sensitivity to the experiences of diverse communities, particularly BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, and other marginalized communities who face significant barriers within our healthcare systems
  • A personal commitment to intersectional feminism, anti-racist action, and social justice

Key Experience Desired

We know that experience is gathered in many ways. These guidelines represent some, but not all, of the ways you might have developed the skills this role requires. If you have a demonstrated ability to fulfill the job duties but got there differently, please apply.

  • 5-10 years of experience in the employee benefits field, with demonstrated experience managing the full scope of client service including renewals
  • Experience managing client accounts of varying sizes, from initial onboarding through ongoing service
  • Comfort working across multiple platforms simultaneously, and a track record of learning new systems quickly and completely
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and multiple simultaneous tasks
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and comfort working remotely using tools like Zoom, Slack, Google Drive, and DocuSign
  • Active L&H license, or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable timeframe after hire
  • Blackbird serves a diverse client base that includes employees who are more comfortable communicating in Spanish. Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English is a meaningful asset in this role, and candidates who bring it are encouraged to speak to that in their cover letter.

Compensation

This is a full-time position at 40 hours per week. The salary range is $95,000-$105,000, commensurate with experience and skills. Blackbird offers:

  • Potential for commission
  • Gold Medical, Dental, and Vision coverage, covered 100% for the employee
  • Life/AD&D, Short Term Disability, and Long Term Disability
  • 401k w/ company match
  • PTO starting at 10 days in year one, with accelerating accrual beginning on date of hire
  • 10 paid federal holidays including Juneteenth, plus 3 floating holidays
  • Time off for Veteran’s Day for those that served
  • One paid day for religious observance
  • 12 hours per quarter of paid volunteer time
  • Paid time to vote
  • Portland Japanese Garden membership, flower CSAs, and community engagement opportunities
  • Opportunity for a long-term career with opportunity for growth within a fast-growing B Corp

Additional Application Instructions

Please submit your resume and a cover letter sharing what draws you to Blackbird Benefits and how your skills and experience will support the work we do. We encourage you to write in your own voice (strong communication skills are a requirement of the role), and we promise that humans will be on the other end reading your responses. Send materials to [email protected] by Friday June 26. Applications without a resume and cover letter will not be considered. We look forward to hearing from you!
